Using the Custom AppWizard or Project Template->Tutorial - Creating an Extension with the AppWizard->Watch the Serial Port Running

While your program is running, select Serial Port 0 from the View menu.  A view will open showing the serial port operation.  You will see the bytes being transmitted.

Stop the simulation by selecting Halt Simulation from the Simulate menu.

Close the Serial Port 0 activity view by clicking on the X in the top right corner of the view.
